This New Horror Film Is Now Streaming, and It Could Strengthen or Shatter Your Romantic Bond.

We present a test for partners in committed relationships who appreciate the horror genre: Get comfortable with your loved one and stream Together. This 2025 indie hit recently had its launch on a streaming platform via Hulu. On the surface, it could look like standard biological terror, but inside Together exists a intense meditation about the ways we decide to love our partners.

A Directorial Debut Exploring Relationship Dynamics

Together is the introductory feature for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It showcases actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as Millie and Tim, a pair who are not married that have stayed together for a decade. Having wed in reality in 2017, the actors bring a unique chemistry to their characters, masterfully depicting both the joys and frustrations of a committed partnership.

The plot begins when Millie and Tim relocate from the urban environment to the countryside for professional reasons. A commonly used story element, of course, but that’s mostly where the conventions conclude. Together becomes as much a psychological exploration of the partnership as it is a movie featuring biological frights.

A Supernatural Catalyst

While walking near their rural residence, a tempest descends, and the protagonists fall into an hole in the earth. After a night spent there and finally finding a way out, a supernatural entity starts to affect the couple. This force induces a paranormal intimacy between them that goes well past typical partnership.

The whole movie is a gradually intensifying fright fest, weaving in bits of dreamlike terrors, gross (but tastefully done) biological grotesqueries, and authentically humorous dialogue (sometimes amidst something horrific). The director weaves these elements together expertly and wraps them up in a consistently growing sense of impending doom.

Layered Performances

A significant portion of Together is only Brie and Franco, and they skillfully illustrate numerous complexities to the partnership at the film's core. Millie's sense of self and emotional bond is deteriorating due to a distance. Her underlying frustration of Tim for his hesitance to chase only his struggling artistic pursuits slowly bubbles to the surface.

Conversely, Tim experiences isolation and isolated by Millie, who’s the reason they’ve relocated rural and removed from his support system. He is terrified of the concept of completely losing his personal autonomy in another person. This fear is intensified by the reality he does not operate a vehicle and is dependent on Millie for mobility.

The film's most intelligent aspect in Together refrains from painting Tim or Millie the obvious villain.

Tim and Millie confront the type of challenges that come with any relationship a decade in. At their core, they continue to care for each other. They find humor with each other, provide solace, and open up at times. But below this facade, there’s an inescapable undercurrent of doubt about their relationship.

Thematic Depth

While the otherworldly presence in Together symbolize these fears of unhealthy attachment and fully committing to a partner, the symbolism avoids being hamfisted or heavy-handed. Instead, these visceral horror elements present a perfect parallel to the relationship narrative. Both the frights and the fights serve the other symbiotically.

A Controversial Conclusion

Together’s final act, which remains unspoiled, has sparked debate on the film’s ultimate message about unhealthy partnerships. Reports indicate that single viewers have seen the movie as a powerful case for staying single. Conversely, a few pairs experiencing tension found that the film actually helped them resolve their issues.

Regardless of your relationship status, your own response could potentially serve as a telling indicator of how you view relationships. Will the finale sow feelings of uneasiness and dread, or a uplifting feeling of optimism? Will you recognize your own traits in one of the characters and feel frustration, or simply look at your significant other and utter, “I’d do that for you”?

Regardless of the outcome, Together is an experiment you can experience right now.

Together is streaming on the streaming service Hulu at present.
